Cleaning: They scrape away infected pulp tissue and bacteria from the walls of the root canal.
Shaping: They enlarge and smooth the canal so it can be effectively disinfected and later filled with a sealing material.
During a root canal, a dentist starts with the thinnest file (usually purple or white) and gradually moves to thicker files until the canal is perfectly shaped and cleaned.
